Rami Reddy (born 1 June 1964, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India) is a former Indian sprinter and national athletics champion, widely regarded as one of India’s leading 200-metre specialists during the 1980’s. Known for his remarkable consistency and explosive sprinting ability, he dominated Indian athletics for nearly a decade before later contributing to the sport as a national-level coach.
Early Life and Education:
N. Rami Reddy was born to Chitti Reddy N.V and Hanumanamma in Visakhapatnam (Vizag). He completed his education at J.V. College, where his athletic talent emerged at an early age. Pursuing formal training in sports science and coaching, he obtained a Diploma in Sports Coaching from the National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Bangalore. To enhance his technical expertise, he later earned a Diploma in High-Level Performance Coaching from Havana, Cuba.
Athletic Career:
Rami Reddy rose to prominence in Indian athletics during the early 1980’s. Representing Andhra Pradesh and later South Central Railways, he became one of India’s top sprinters, excelling in both the 100 metres and 200 metres events.
Between 1983 and 1991, Reddy held the national sprint title for eight consecutive years, a rare feat in Indian track and field history. His performances earned him recognition as the fastest man in India during his competitive peak.

Rami Reddy consistently recorded times between 21.1 and 21.3 seconds in the 200 metres, with a personal best of 21.07 seconds—one of the fastest marks by an Indian sprinter of that era. His timing came close to the long-standing national record of 20.7 seconds set by Milkha Singh.

He won multiple gold medals at the National Championships, National Games, and Inter-Railway competitions, frequently achieving the sprint double (100m and 200m). His performances were instrumental in securing top honours for South Central Railway in national athletics meets.

Throughout his career, Rami Reddy was felicitated by numerous organizations, including the South Central Railway Sports Club, Workshop Division Sports Committee, and New Young Skippers Club, for his contribution to Indian athletics. He received honorary doctorate from Global Human Peace University in 2023.

After an illustrious competitive career, Rami Reddy joined the Indian Railways in 1984 as an athletics coach.
